CIED infections are associated with significant morbidity, mortality, and cost. Infection rates associated with device implantation are reported to be between 1% and 7%: (Lai K.K., Fontecchio S.A. Infection is the most serious complication of CIED implantation and requires explantation of all hardware, with fatalities occurring in 3–19% of patients.  Invasive procedures are becoming increasingly common in cardiology and interventional radiology operating rooms, and they may expose patients to a higher risk of hospital infections.

Pacemakers, implantable defibrillators, vascular endografts, and PFO or DIA closing prosthetics are all surgeries that expose patients to a higher risk of bacterial contamination.

Even medical devices that require fairly long preparation times are exposed to the same risk.

Prevention of Infections of Cardiac Implantable Electronic Devices

CIEDs may be linked to several complications, including infections, and the consequences of them may be catastrophic. The cost of treating device-associated infections may be enormous, thus leading to increased healthcare expenses.
